Phone scammers impersonating law enforcement

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Telephone scammers are claiming to be law enforcement, according to a Brunswick Police press release.

The release said that a scammer identifies himself as Brunswick Police Officer Lieutenant Chambers. The scammer would then state that a warrant was issued for not making a court appearance for a speeding citation. He then offers to drop the warrant would be dropped with a phone payment of $364 by credit or debit.

A citizen who reported the incident did not give credit card information and reported it to officials as a possible scam.

In addition to this scam, reports have been provided that scammers claiming to be FBI agents are making similar claims to avoid jail time.

The Brunswick Police Department warns about giving bank, credit or debit card information to anyone over the phone. Additionally, anyone receiving these telephone scam calls should contact your respective Police Agency.
