ST. MARYS, Ga. -- Vandals broke into an animal shelter in St. Marys Sunday morning and released dozens of animals in the process.
The Love of Pets Animal Shelter in St. Marys is still trying to recover after some of the animals escaped.
Sometime between midnight and 8:00 a.m., someone cut the screens and left the doors and windows of the shelter wide open, according to President Terra Lucent.
Because the shelter doesn't keep all its cages closed, some of the animals ran outside.
The organization has about 175 cats. Many came back in on their own, but others had to be captured and some are still missing, according to Lucent.
Lucent said the vandals put some of the cats over the fence onto the property next door.
Many of these cats were rescued from extreme situations and have never been out of the shelter after their rescue.
To adopt an animal currently at the shelter call 912-882-4344.
