CVS armed robbery suspect in custody following police involved shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 24-year-old man is recovering at UF Health Jacksonville following a police involved shooting Tuesday, but is facing multiple charges for other crimes he is accused of committing.

Herman Isiah Pickens has been charged with armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon for allegedly robbing a CVS Pharmacy on the 6400 block of San Juan Avenue July 8.

According to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office police report, Pickens entered the CVS, picked up a pair of sunglasses and approached the cash register where two employees were located.

Pickens is accused of pulling a gun from his waist area, pointing it at the head of one of the employees and demanding money. Pickens allegedly fired a shot at the victims head, however the victim was able to get away and was only grazed by the bullet.

Pickens then pointed his gun at a second victim, the report detailed, continuing his demand for money.

According to the second victim, Pickens attempted to fire the gun again, but it seemed to have jammed. The second victim said she, "heard clicks and believed the suspect had also attempted to shoot her."

Pickens was captured on surveillance video and was positively identified by family members.

While police were were attempting to apprehend Pickens in the 6400 block of San Juan Avenue Tuesday, Pickens was shot in the process, according to the JSO report.

Pickens is currently being held in the Duval County jail without bond.

Pickens has an extensive criminal history in Duval County going back to 2008 when he was just 19-years-old according to police records. Pickens has multiple grand theft charges, battery, multiple drug possession charges, multiple dealing in stolen property charges, multiple burglary charges and more on his record.
