JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The two-alarm fire at Woods of Mandarin Apartments Sunday Afternoon damaged eight units.

Kimberly Pabon, 19, and Toujan Stringfield, 21, rented the apartment with the most damage. Pabon was at work when the fire happened, however Stringfield was at home at the time.

Before the fire Stringfield was walking their dog, Blaze. Pabon said Blaze didn't want to go inside the apartment after the walk.  The dog was barking at the door. Pabon said he was warning her boyfriend of the fire.

When Springfield walked inside he saw smoke coming from behind the coach. Stringfield attempted to put the fire out before firefighters arrived, Pabon said.  He could not , and he got of the apartment.

Pabon said Stringfield began having chest pains and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene and the first arriving units had the fire under control in about 25 minutes. District Chief Roger Lewis said 25 fire units in total responded to the fire, with 75 to 85 firefighters on the scene.

The State Fire Marshal was called in to investigate the cause of the fire which Chief Lewis said destroyed one building with the eight apartments. He said firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to a shared attic in a building attached to the one destroyed by fire.
