JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Ryan Backmann is a victim advocate with Compassionate Families in Jacksonville, a non-profit organization that serves the needs of all homicide survivors in Northeast Florida.
Backmann got involved with the Compassionate Families after his father was killed in 2009.
Backmann says his father was vacuuming drywall dust at a job site on the southside of Jacksonville when someone walked up, stuck a gun in his back, took his wallet, then shot and killed him.
Clifford Backmann died at 56 years old.
Ryan says the days, weeks and months after his father's murder were almost unbearable, but because of the support he received from his friends he made in through.
Shortly after his father's death he received a call from Compassionate Families and he's been a voice for the victims of homicide for the last three years.
Ryan Backmann is our "Hero Next Door".
