PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- One person is dead, one injured following a Thursday morning train accident in Putnam County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, two pedestrians were struck by an Amtrak train around 7:10 a.m. Thursday at U.S. 17 near County Road 309 in Satsuma.
FHP Lt. Justin Asbury said a woman and man were lying on the train tracks behind a Kangaroo Store.
The woman was identified in a FHP police report as 32-year-old Amanda Harvey and was transported to UF Health in serious condition. The man was identified as 30-year-old Stephen Smith and died from his injuries.
The report detailed that the train operator Daniel Lopez, 44, used the horn at the whistle post and after as it approached the objects. The operator said he saw victims attempt to move out of the way, but it was too late.
Asbury believes that impairment of some type may have been a factor in the incident. No one was injured on the train.
Officials are continuing the investigation and First Coast News will update the story as it becomes available.
