PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- Twelve students are injured after a bus flipped on its side at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday at SR-21 near Baden Powell Road.
Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Dylan Bryan said there was a total of 30 students on board the school bus, which was coming from C.H. Price Middle.
The bus was traveling northbound on SR-21 and a green Toyota truck was traveling
southbound on SR-21 when the driver of the truck turned left in front of the bus, according to FHP. The bus driver tried to avoid the collision and it overturned on its side, the FHP press release said.
The driver Michael Backlund, 31, received abrasions, lacerations and a broken bone. Eleven students received minor injuries. The driver and eight students were transported to UF Health, according to the release.
The other students were not injured.
There is no video or audio on the school bus. Also, the bus was not equipped with seat belts because it was made without it.
The driver of the Toyota, Irish O'Sullivan, 37, is charged with violating the right of way.
