JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Maple Street Biscuit Company with locations in San Marco and the Beaches has created a special Spiced Apple Biscuit to raise funds for our Apple Project.

Owner Gus Evans says the biscuits--made from scratch--have apples, spices, homemade whipped cream and homemade caramel sauce.

He says each sells for $5 and he's donated the entire $5 to The Apple Project.

The biscuits are available now through Saturday, September 21st.

The project is in full swing to raise funds to build a free dental clinic in Jacksonville.  If the money is raised, the clinic would open next year in Jacksonville and serve 6,000 patients right away and, eventually, 20,000 per year.

The clinic would help low income, uninsured adults and children. The Weaver Foundation is matching donations up to $100,000.

Evans says his new restaurant is not a national chain.  He and his business partner lost their jobs when the economy went sour, and they decided to create their own business venture.

Evans wanted to stay in Jacksonville and be "part of the community."  That's one reason he's helping the Apple Project.

He says he and his friends from church have tasting parties to make sure new recipes are truly good.

He says they spent about four months trying various biscuit recipes.

Applause to Evans for helping, especially considering the fact that he has a very big event happening in his own life right now.

His son, Luke Michael, was born early at three pounds and eight ounces. He's in the NICU now. Evans says with the "Lord's blessing" his son will pull through and be a strong little fellow.
