JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol responded to two fatal motorcycle crashes late Thursday night and early Friday morning.

All lanes reopened Friday morning after a fatal crash Thursday night on I-295 Northbound at Beach Boulevard.

According to a release from FHP, 22-year-old William Alfred Cooper was traveling at a high rate of speed in the left lane of I-295.

Cooper lost control of his motorcycle, struck a guardrail and was ejected. Cooper was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to FHP, and died on scene.

FHP is unsure if alcohol played a role in the crash.

A second man died early Friday morning after wrecking his motorcycle on Riverside Avenue northbound while getting onto the Acosta Bridge. Michael Shane Johnston, 25, was heading north on the Acosta Bridge toward the I-95 entrance ramp, when he lost control of his motorcycle, according to a report from FHP.

Johnston veered left and struck a concrete barrier, was ejected and went over the barrier wall, landing on the railroad tracks under the I-95 overpass.

Johnston was transported to UF Health Jacksonville, but died as a result of his injuries, according to the report.

Johnston was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and FHP hasn't yet determined if alcohol was a factor in the incident. FHP was dispatched to the scene at 1:20 a.m. and the road was closed for a few hours following the crash.
