JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The operator of an unlicensed day care facility pleaded guilty Wednesday to the charge of manslaughter in the death of a 2-year-old child.
The child, Steven Spurlock, was pulled from the pool at Kiddie Heaven on May 21 and taken to Wolfson Children's Hospital in critical condition. The center was ordered by the Florida Department of Children and Families to cease operations. Steven died on May 25.
Jan Marie Buchanan, 46, was sentenced to 10 years probation with two days each year spent in jail.
Buchanan was also ordered to donate $2,000 each year for 10 years to "Safe Kids" to promote swimming safety. She's also forbidden to own or operate a day care facility again.
