ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- A family of five safely evacuated their home after a fire broke out around 8 a.m. Friday according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries according to an on scene commander overseeing the fire located in the 2800 block of Regas Drive West, right off the Wonderwood Expressway in the Oaks of Atlantic Beach.
"There are more important things then material items, they can be replaced," said Joann Francis who lives in the home and tried to put out flames with a water hose.
Francis says the fire started underneath the home near the air conditioner. Investigators are still trying to pinpoint the cause.
Harry Francis rushed home to see his wife and grandchildren made it out safely.
On his mind an American flag in a shadow box was given to the family following his grandfather's military funeral.
"My father gave it to me. I was hopefully going to pass it on. I still got it," said a relieved Francis.
Francis says the shadow box was damaged, but the flag was one of a few items that was saved.
The home is being considered a total loss.
