NORFOLK, Va. -- A Norfolk-based Navy ship and its crew of about 360 is ready to begin its journey to a new homeport.

The amphibious transport dock USS New York will leave Norfolk Naval Station Wednesday and move to Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville, Fla.

It is the first of three Virginia-based Navy ships heading to a new homeport in Florida.

The Navy says the move is part of an amphibious ready group homeport change "in support of strategic dispersal and two viable East Coast surface ship homeports."

USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) and USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) are scheduled to move to Mayport next year.

The Iwo Jima is undergoing work at a Norfolk shipyard. The Fort McHenry currently is based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek.
