(UPDATE 12/19/2013 11:48 p.m.) Crystal Heidrick has been discharged from the hospital.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A five-year-old girl was killed early Thursday morning when the car she was in hit a tree on I-295.
Kelsey Johnson, 5, died as a result of the crash while traveling in a late model Chevrolet Impala being driven by her mother, 28-year-old Crystal Heidrick, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Heidrick was transported to UF Health Jacksonville in serious condition. At this point in the investigation, it is believed alcohol and speed were a factor in the deadly crash, FHP said.
According to the FHP report the Heidrick was traveling in the left emergency lane on I-295 Northbound and drove into the grassy center median when the emergency lane ran out. FHP said Heidrick over corrected, crossed the northbound lanes and struck a tree.
Heidrick consented to a blood draw, but has not been charged at this time.
