ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Monday night attempted home invasion robbery that may be narcotics-related.

Two armed suspects forced their way into a home in the 700 block of Duval Street after banging on the door and yelling "Police, Police," according to a release from SJSO Media Relations Officer Kevin Kelshaw.

A friend visiting the home, 32-year-old Jamar Hamilton, exchanged gunfire with the suspects and was hit in the abdomen. Hamilton was taken to UF Health at Jacksonville and is in serious, yet stable, condition.

According to a SJSO Offense Report, a woman and her children -- a male and female, both 17; a 16-year-old male; and a 12-year-old male -- were in the front bedroom hiding on the floor when shots were fired.

Witnesses told police that they observed a Chevy Malibu leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. Nurses at UF Health told police they removed a large amount of cash, more than $3,000, and a cellphone from Hamilton's pocket.

Anyone with any information concerning this investigation is asked to contact SJSO Detective Eugene Tolbert at (904) 209-3985. You can also remain anonymous and possibly be eligible for a cash reward by calling Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 1-(888) 277-TIPS (8477).
