JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Duval County Public Schools is celebrating their 150th birthday this year!
This year also marks the 145th year for the Duval County School Board!
Did you know:
- In spring of 1864, J.M. Hawks opened the 1st free public school in the state of Florida in Jacksonville
- In March of 1869, Duval County's 1st Board of Public Instruction was appointed by the State Board of Education, with five members
- In 1869, the first Superintendent of Public Instruction was appointed
Board members, administration, educators, students along with Superintendent Dr. Nikolai P. Vitti will hold a press conference December 9 to unveil the new branding campaign for the district in commemoration of the district's 150th milestone.
The press conference will take place at 11 a.m. at the Prime Osborn Convention Center located at 1000 Water Street.
The new and expanded "School Choice Expo" will take place the next day.
