BRADFORD COUNTY, Fla. -- A Bradford County corrections officer resigned after allegations of capital sexual battery surfaced Friday.
The Bradford County Sheriff's Office was notified of the investigation into Robert V. Melton, 59, by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The FDLE said it received information indicating Melton had committed capital sexual battery.
Melton's residence and a storage shed in Starke were searched after warrants were issued.
The Starke resident was booked into the Bradford County Jail then transferred to an undisclosed correctional facility for security purposes.
Melton was hired as a corrections officer in 2007 under a previous administration, according to BCSO.
Melton submitted a handwritten resignation to Sheriff Gordon Smith while being interviewed about the allegations.
"I am deeply disturbed by this arrest and will continue to work closely with FDLE until this case is complete. The men and women of the Bradford County Sheriff's Office are a fine group of professionals. This organization should not be judged on the deplorable actions of this individual. We will continue to move forward being constantly vigilant against any wrong doers," Sheriff Smith said.
The BCSO said further details of the case will not be released until the investigation is complete.
Melton will be held on no bond until his first appearance before a judge.
