ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Sheriff's deputies have determined alcohol was not a factor in the crash that knocked out power in a Julington Creek neighborhood Tuesday night, but speed was.
According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, 38-year-old Donna Gayle McCulloch was on Flora Branch Road approaching Durbin Creek Boulevard when the car veered off the road.
Deputies said McCulloch overcorrected, causing the car to cross the roadway and hit a tree before hitting a utility pole, knocking out power to the area.
The speed limit in that area is 35 mph, but the investigation has determined she was traveling between 78 and 83 mph at the time of the crash.
McCulloch, who was wearing a seat belt, was airlifted to Shands Jacksonville.
She remains in critical condition and is unable to speak with investigators, who said they still don't know why she would have been driving that fast.
The investigation into the crash is continuing.
