JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A fight Tuesday evening led a man to shoot and kill his brother-in-law, according to police.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Lt. Larry Schmitt responded to the scene around 6:50 p.m. at the family's property on Elizabeth Lane.
Clifford Eugene van Dyke, 57, and his brother-in-law, 61-year-old Marvin Paul Gilhousen Jr., lived next door to each other, police said. There are three houses on the properties, all occupied by family members, many of whom were home at the time of the shooting.
When police arrived, van Dyke was still in the yard, where he was arrested. Police said he admitted shooting his brother, but didn't explain why.
Schmitt said van Dyke has a record that includes DUI and battery, and that he and his brother-in-law have had disagreements in the past where alcohol was a factor.
Gilhousen sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and right cheek, police said.
Van Dyke is charged with murder.
