ORLANDO, Fla. -- Florida A&M University's Board of Trustees has voted to reprimand the school's president following the death of a band member in what detectives say was an incident related to hazing.
Thursday's vote in Orlando was 8-4.
The reprimand came in place of a motion to put FAMU President James Ammons on administrative leave until the criminal investigation into drum major Robert Champion's death is done. Detectives are probing the role of hazing in the Nov. 19 death.
Band director Julian White has been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Board member Rufus Montgomery says Ammons should be treated in the same manner. Montgomery also criticized the president for accreditation problems with some programs and for failing to keep the board informed.
