Car Drives Into Publix Supermarket, Witness: Person Trapped Under Car

PALM COAST, Fla. -- A car drove into a Publix supermarket Saturday afternoon, hurting people inside.

According to witnesses, a woman drove a Toyota Camry into the Publix at 4950 Belle Terre Parkway. The Flagler County Sheriff's Office says the car drove "through the entrance, into the store, and injured at least ten people."

It happened at 1:24 p.m. Saturday.

A Publix spokesperson told First Coast News eight people were injured. Of those eight, one was flown to a hospital and the other seven have non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses told First Coast News someone was trapped under the car, and people helped lift up the car to rescue the person from underneath.

A report from the Florida Highway Patrol lists 76-year-old Thelma Wagenhoffer of Palm Coast as the driver. FHP says she was not hurt.

The report says Wagenhoffer "drove into the building, striking doors, walls, and pedestrians before coming to a stop at an end cap of a food aisle.

Charges are pending against the driver.

People who were injured range in age from 3 months old to 86 years old.

The store is currently closed.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
