JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Ryan Timoney, a local soldier critically injured in Afghanistan, is showing signs of improvement.

His mother, Diane Timoney, tells First Coast News he is conscious and writing messages to his family.

Wednesday will mark a month since his unit was attacked by a suicide bomber and two other soldiers in his unit were killed.

She says he will be moved out of Walter Reed on Friday, and flown to a traumatic brain injury rehabilitation center in Tampa.

When he woke up last week, she says he first wrote out, "I love you," to his family, before asking for something to eat.

He's now using a wheelchair to get around Walter Reed, and his family remains hopeful he will continue to improve in the coming days.

If you would like to send him a card, his address is:
