McDonald told family members he was going to take a kayak and camping trip along the Suwannee River.  He has not been seen or heard from since October 9.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission requested the assistance of the Coast Guard Sunday after McDonald's family reported him missing.

During the three-day search rescue crews covered approximately 500 square miles.  Search crews included a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater in addition to multiple vessels on the water and FWC crews.

Chief Petty Officer Harold LeBoeuf, a command duty officer at the sector, said, "The Coast Guard's decision to suspend a search is done with extreme care and deliberation.  After a probable search area is saturated several times with a maximum number of assets, resources, crews and a person in distress is still not located, a decision is made to suspend the search."
