ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. - The risks and dangers of using firearms as a way of celebrating can have dangerous and unplanned consequences. Alachua County Sheriff's Office would like to ensure that everyone has a safe and happy holiday by offering these firework safety tips:

  • Always read and follow label directions
  • Have an adult present
  • Always have water handy (garden hose and bucket)
  • Never experiment or make your own fireworks
  • Light only one firework at a time
  • Never relight a "dud" firework (wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water)
  • Never give fireworks to small children
  • Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then disposing of them in a trash can
  • The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any body part over the firework
Deputies will be on the lookout for celebratory gunfire, an illegal activity that typically peaks during celebratory times, such as July 4th. Any bullet discharged from a gun, even into the sky, must land at some location and could cause injury or death.
