JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has released updated information regarding the city's current murder rate.
To date, there have been 83 homicides this year. That compares to 68 homicides in the same time frame from 2012.
Of the 83 homicides this year, 66 of them are classified as murders.
Murder is a declaration regarding someone's manner of death made by the Jacksonville Medical Examiner.
Of those 66 murders, 34 have been cleared.
While on the surface it might look like half of the city's murders from this year have reached a resolution, that is not necessarily the case.
The sheriff's office says if an older case is cleared in the current year, it is counted under the current year.
Therefore, some cases that have been in cleared in 2013 so far could very well be from previous years
Of the 68 homicides from last year, 55 of them are classified as murders.
Of those 55 murders, 56 are cleared.
