JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The man accused of shooting and killing his wife at a Westside restaurant appeared in court Monday afternoon.

Sheridan Landell Veney, 44, is charged with murder after police say he shot his wife, Lisa Veney, 42, five times.

Police say the suspect and the victim were separated. They say he was having dinner with their 18-year-old daughter at the Applebees on Lane Avenue and when the victim returned, an argument ensued. Police say the victim was headed towards the door when Veney allegedly fired.

Veney waited for police to arrive. JSO Sgt. Sean Coarsey told First Coast News the victim was transported to a local hospital in life threatening condition and was receiving surgery, but died.

Court records show the couple had been going through a foreclosure since June. Linda Dennison says she's been the Veneys' neighbor for 14 years and was shocked when she learned of the shooting.

"It really upsets me because such a nice couples lives are destroyed just like that," said Dennison.

Police say Veney made a full confession. They say there may have been a history of previous domestic issues behind closed doors.

"What we were told is that there was some undocumented domestic violence between the two of them but we don't have any documentation of that," said Chris Butler, Assistant Chief of Investigations, JSO.

Dennison said neither of them ever seemed violent.

"I cant even imagine what could have happened that would have made him do that," said Dennison.

Dennison said Veney would help neighbors with yard work and was always very friendly. She said the teenage girl would sometimes visit her father on the weekends.

"She would come spend time with him, with her dad; he'd take her out to eat and stuff and he'd always tell me the things they did together," said Dennison.

Police questioned dozens of witnesses on scene. The Applebee's location where the shooting took place was closed Monday.

Veney's next court date is on January 21st.
