CLAY COUNTY, FL - Clay County investigators arrested today 20-year-old Brian Curtis Avery in connection to the December 2002 murder of Middleburg resident Keith Lavinder. Avery, a former roommate of Lavinder, was booked into the Clay County jail today. In addition to making the arrest, CCSO investigators Joe Bucci and Marty Cotchaleolovitch recovered a gun that was missing from Keith Lavinder's mobile home since the time of his death. Ballistics testing is underway to determine if the gun is the murder weapon.
The investigation into the shooting death of 18-year-old Keith Kyle Lavinder remained a top priority for the Clay County Sheriff's Office. Lavinder's mother found her son in his mobile home at 75 Orchid Avenue in the Clay Hill area on the morning of Friday, December 27, 2002. Keith Lavinder's family became concerned when he did not arrive for work that morning and went to check on him.
Clay County Sheriff Scott Lancaster is pleased that an arrest has been made in this case. "The murder of any young person is especially heinous. I'm proud of the work done by our staff to solve this case and hope that, in some small way, this arrest provides some closure for the victim's grieving family members", Lancaster said.
