SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Military officials say soldiers who live at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah will soon get new housing.
A grand opening was held this week for the airfield's most recent neighborhood - a 98-home community for enlisted soldiers who are ranked staff sergeant and below.
The Savannah Morning News reports that many of the post's outdated homes have been torn down and replaced with larger, more contemporary townhome-style residences.
Col. Kevin Gregory, the garrison commander for Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield, says the housing upgrades are part of a 2003 Army initiative to better care for soldiers and families as they face constant deployments and related stresses.
