JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --  The USS Bataan arrived at Naval Station Mayport Friday morning. The amphibious assault ship will play basketball court for the 2012 Navy-Marine Corps Classic.

When the ship arrived Friday Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown presented the commanding officer Captain Erik Ross and the crew of the Bataan with a key to the city of Jacksonville.

The amphibious ship will soon undergo a transformation since it will be the platform for the 2012 Navy-Marine Corps Classic men's basketball game.  The ship is part of the representational amphibious ready group ships that U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced will be homeported in Jacksonville.

"I am proud and honored at the arrival of the USS Bataan at Naval Station Mayport," said Mayor Brown. "Our community enjoys substantial ties to the active duty military members who drive our economy and our quality of life."

The ship's arrival is the first in a series of week long events celebrating Military Valor.  Other festivities kick off November 5.  The week will highlight the service and sacrifice of Jacksonville's military and veterans community.

Rear Admiral Scorby, Commander, Navy Region Southeast, said, "The Navy is proud to be a part of the City of Jacksonville's 'Week of Valor.'  This is just the latest example of our long-standing friendship that makes the Jacksonville area the most requested duty station in the Navy."

Monday's events start with a Military Appreciation Luncheon held by the Jax Chamber.  Community leaders and service providers will participate in a Veterans Summit at UNF Wednesday.  Friday there will be a veterans jobs fair held at the Prime Osborne Convention Center.
