WASHINGTON, D.C. -- CIA director David Petraeus has resigned from the CIA, citing an extramarital affair.

Petraeus submitted his resignation in a letter dated Friday and it was accepted by the White House.

In the letter, Petraeus noted that he had been married for 37 years and had exercised "extremely poor judgment" in conducting an extramarital affair.

The New York Times is reporting that Administration and Congressional officials identified the woman that Petraeus had the affair with as his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

Petraeus goes on to write, "Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation."

Petraeus took over as head of the CIA in September of 2011 following his tour as head of allied forces in Afghanistan.
