JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The United States Coast Guard medically evacuated a 45-year-old sailor from the USS Carney Thursday.

The ship was about 70 miles off the coast of Jacksonville when the request for a medical evacuation went out.

The Coast Guard said in a news release naval crewmembers contacted watch standers at the 7th Coast Guard District Command Center in Jacksonville.  Crewmembers reported a 45-year-old senior chief petty officer was experiencing stroke-like symptoms.

Personnel consulted the Coast Guard flight surgeon who determined the sailor needed to be evacuated.

Coast Guard Air Station Savannah launched a helicopter which met the Carney at sea at 12:45 a.m. Thursday.

The release said Coast Guardsmen airlifted the man onto the helicopter and then flew him to Jacksonville International Airport.  Once on the ground, medical services transported the sailor to Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville.

The Coast Guard said the man's condition is unknown and his name is not being released.
