There was a time when Rep. Paul Ryan was hoping he'd get to take an oath of office on Inauguration Day.

USA TODAY's Susan Davis reports from the House Republican retreat that the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee will be in attendance at President Obama's public swearing-in ceremony on Monday.

"Yes," Ryan, R-Wis., said when asked in Williamsburg, Va. "It's my obligation."

Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, has been keeping a low-profile since he and Mitt Romney lost on Election Day. While he spoke to reporters Thursday at the House GOP retreat, he declined to do so before TV cameras.

No word on what Romney is doing on Inauguration Day, but chances are pretty good he won't be in the nation's capital.
