JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Supreme Court of the United States is hearing arguments in a case that could impact the way some parts of Florida holds elections.

The hearing centers around the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It forces places that have a history of discrimination to get federal approval before any changes can be made to the way elections are held.

Those opposed to the bill say it singles out areas, even if those areas have made reforms while ignoring other states. Those for keeping it the same, say the areas covered could revert back to discrimination without it.

Florida Congresswoman Corrine Brown says she supports keeping the Voting Rights Act of 1965 the same and will sit in on the Supreme Court hearings.

Since it was passed in 1965, it has been renewed four times. The latest being in 2006.
