President Obama will award the Medal of Honor next month to a cavalry scout who protected comrades while under enemy fire during a 2009 battle in Afghanistan, the White House announced Friday.

Staff Sgt. Ty M. Carter will receive the Medal of Honor during a White House ceremony Aug. 26.

Carter is being honored for an Oct. 3, 2009, battle in which he held off enemy fire and assisted an injured soldier while sustaining multiple wounds himself.

He will be the fifth living recipient of the medal to be honored for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The Army says Carter killed enemy troops, resupplied ammunition to American fighters, rendered first aid and risked his own life to save an injured soldier pinned down by a barrage of enemy fire.

In February, Obama bestowed the Medal of Honor on another survivor of that firefight, former Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha.

Carter, who grew up in Spokane, Wash., also has received a Purple Heart.
