ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal is honoring recipients of the Purple Heart medal.
Deal on Thursday signed a proclamation stating that Purple Heart Week in Georgia will run from Sunday through next Saturday. The Order of the Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are wounded in combat.
The proclamation signed by Deal says Georgia is home to more than 5,000 veterans and active duty military personnel who have received the honor.
The proclamation says this year marks the 231st anniversary of the establishment of the Purple Heart.
