TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida Gov. Rick Scott is supporting President Barack Obama's push to keep college costs down, but says the president waited too long to start his effort.

President Obama on Thursday outlined a rating system for colleges that would judge schools on affordability and performance.

For the last two years Scott has fought to keep tuition rates down and earlier this year proposed tying money for universities to performance criteria. He also pushed to have state colleges bring down the cost of individual degrees.

Scott said that Obama was "late to the party" and following Florida's lead with his latest proposal. But in an interview he added "I'm glad he's here."

Obama during his remarks mentioned efforts in other states but he did not cite Florida.
