Florida lawmakers are considering tougher laws for sex offenders.

It comes after the recent kidnapping and slaying of an 8-year-old girl.

The man accused in Cherish Perrywinkle's death has a history of sex crimes.

Donald Smith, 56, is accused of abducting Perrywinkle from a Walmart in Jacksonville and then killing her a short time later. He had been released from jail only three weeks before Perrywinkle's death on another sex crime.

Perrywinkle's mother is pleading with lawmakers to toughen sex offender laws.

"I felt as if God left that day," said Rayne Perrywinkle.

She angrily spoke Wednesday at a legislative hearing on sex offender laws. She said if nothing is done now, more children like her daughter will be killed.

"If nothing happens now, there's going to be another little child on the news with an Amber alert," said Rayne Perrywinkle. "Why did it take 6 hours for them to start looking for my child? I didn't do this."

Republican Rep. Janet Adkins of Fernandina Beach called for the hearing as a response to the slaying.
