JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Bugs flying around your home in droves may be a sign you need to call a pest control company. But don't be surprised of you're told those bugs are termites. Pest control companies said they are getting at least 10 calls a day about termites.

Research shows subterranean termites are the most destructive insect nationwide. They cause more than $2 billion in damage each year, more property damage than fire and windstorm combined.

So it pays to watch out for the tiny termites that come in large numbers when they swarm.

Blanca Nelson said she's discovered the destructive power of these termites. Even though her home was being inspected annually by her pest control company, termites went undetected, she said.

"The termites were undetected until one of her window sills fell off and revealed what has become a major expense."

So, what can you do to protect your property?

  • If you see water or moisture damage around your home, address it immediately.
  • Get an inspection by a reputable company
  • Check the state's website for the company's license and complaint history.
  • If your home qualifies, get a repair guarantee in your pest control contract, versus a contract that calls for retreatment if there's damage.
