JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mayoral candidate Alvin Brown held a fundraiser at Elevated Avenue on St. Johns Avenue tonight.

The fundraiser followed a speech by Brown at the United Way of Northeast Florida earlier in the afternoon where he discussed a new initiative he will launch if elected mayor.

The program would help ensure that state education budget cuts do not prevent Jacksonville school children from participating in arts and athletics programs.

The democrat is in a run-off against Republican Mike Hogan for the mayoral seat on May 17.

Education is the focal point of his campaign and the key to Jacksonville's future, said Brown.

At the event he pledged not to eliminate arts, music, or athletics in Jacksonville's public schools if elected mayor.

Brown vowed his administration would provide leadership by launching the "Mayor's Education Challenge." He also vowed to build a public-private partnership to raise the money necessary to ensure all Jacksonville children can participate in extracurricular activities.

With those steps in place, Brown said he will join education advocates in Tallahassee next year to try and have Republican Governor Rick Scott restore education funding.

This year Scott approved $90 million in education cuts.
