JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Trish and Steve Millican have a special reason to donate their artistic skills to Operation Thumbs Up.
Steve Millican spent his life in the military before retirement, helping sailors and marines with their medical needs, he said. Now he and his wife will make a tall - very tall - wedding cake for the July 9 wedding of Tyler Southern and Ashley Statti.
First Coast News is helping throw a wedding for the couple. Tyler is a marine from Jacksonville who served in Afghanistan and stepped on an IED last year.
Now a triple amputee, Tyler is full of spunk and an attitude that inspires.
Metro Cakes, located in the Regency area, plans to make a multi-level cake featuring chocolate, white chocolate and the bride's colors of white, black and hot pink.
Tyler clarifies that he will not be wearing pink to the wedding, by the way. He's wearing all white and his goal is to walk down the aisle, which will be on a dock in Mandarin, on his new prosthetic legs.
Ashley is excited about the "bling" for the cake, individual rhinestone-type gems to be added one-by-one. She also fell in love with strands of shiny costume jewels banded around the cake layers.
Dozens of photographers have volunteered to help at the wedding at no cost. Selections are still being made in that area.
