JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville City Council Finance Committee has voted to cut $2.1 million from the public library budget.
Council member Richard Clark said closing all libraries on Mondays is the fairest way to cut the budget.
It would mean layoffs. "Our estimate is 40 full time jobs and 7 part time jobs so about 47 people would lose their jobs," explained Barbara Gubbin, Jacksonville Public Library Director.
Gubbin said she prefers a plan where underutilized libraries have fewer hours.
If the full council approves the plan, the Monday closings will go into effect October 1st.
