JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A teenager is in jail and an infant is in critical condition following an incident at a home in northwest Jacksonville.
The incident happened Sunday morning, when 16-year-old Javarris Jawon Lane told police the infant fell from a bed while Lane was playing a game.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrest report, an adult was performing CPR on the infant when the first officers arrived. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department then took the infant to the hospital.
Police investigated in the bedroom, and determined that Lane's story about the infant falling wasn't possible considering the nature of the child's injuries. The distance from the bed to the floor, according to investigators, was 20 inches.
Lane spoke with police, but his information has been redacted from the report.
Neighbor Leshae Smith, who lives in the same duplex said, "From what I know she was sleeping and rolled off the bed and hit her head."
After the investigation and interview, Lane was arrested on a charge of aggravated child abuse causing serious injury.
The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office late Monday afternoon said the baby is in life threatening condition. The infant was taken to Wolfson's Childrens Hospital.
