THE VILLAGES, Fla. -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is warning senior citizens to beware of turning Social Security into a "Perry scheme."
Romney was taking a swipe Tuesday at Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is also running for the GOP nomination.
Shortly after entering the race, Perry called the senior income program a "Ponzi scheme."
The former governor of Massachusetts cautioned seniors during a 45-minute campaign speech just north of Orlando at The Villages, one of Florida's largest senior communities.
Social security is nearly sacred at The Villages, and Romney assured the several hundred people in the audience that the program would not change for them on his watch.
Romney said whoever wins the 2012 presidential election needs to solve the program's shortcomings so future generations can benefit from it.
