JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The teenager who was the last person with a baby before her death has had his charges upgraded from aggravated child abuse to murder.
Javarris Jawon Lane, 16, was arrested following the Sept. 25 incident at a home on West First Street.
The victim, 1-year-old Alexandria Williams, was found unresponsive and hospitalized. She died at the hospital four days later.
Lane initially said Williams was sitting in his lap as he played a video game, and that he put her on the bed and she fell off.
However, detectives determined the bed was too low to the floor (20 inches) for such a fall to cause such serious injuries.
Lane was arrested on a charge of aggravated child abuse.
After Williams' death, the medical examiner determined the death was a homicide.
Detectives interviewed Lane, with his father present, and he changed his story after learning the child couldn't have been fatally injured falling from that bed.
Williams then said she was crying, so he shook her, and her head hit the dresser twice while he shook her.
This morning, Lane was charged with the murder of Alexandria Williams.
