JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The mother of 12-year-old murder defendant Cristian Fernandez was scheduled for trial today.
Biannela Susana's trial was scheduled for Feb. 27 by Circuit Judge Elizabeth Senterfitt, according to the Duval County Clerk of Courts website. She will have pretrial appearances Jan. 18 and Feb. 23.
Susana is the mother of Fernandez, who was indicted in June in the murder of his 2-year-old half brother. Susana was also charged in the case with aggravated manslaughter of a child.
Fernandez is charged with murder in the first degree and aggravated child abuse. He is accused of hitting his half brother David Galarriago on the head at least twice on March 14, killing him, said State Attorney Angela Corey after a grand jury handed down the decision.
Fernandez' next court appearance is Oct. 31.
Susana's arrest report said she came home to find the 2-year-old unresponsive. She put ice on his head and turned to websites for information about concussions. She told police she waited about two hours for the boy to wake up before she took him to a hospital, according to the report.
