JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A church is planning a prayer service for the local FAMU community following the mysterious death of a band member last week.

Champion, 26, died suddenly following the Florida Classic Saturday. The Atlanta native had just returned to the Florida A&M University marching band's hotel in Orlando when he became sick and complained of being unable to breathe.

Florida A&M University President Dr. James Ammons announced Tuesday that the university has suspended band performances indefinitely and on Wednesday, the director of the famed Marching 100, Julian White, was fired.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said he suspects hazing is involved in Champion's death.

Senior pastor John Allen Newman of the Sanctuary @ Mt. Calvary Church in Jacksonville will hold a prayer service for the local FAMU community and Champion's family on Saturday afternoon.

"Jacksonville is rich in Florida A&M history and culture," said a statement issued today from the church. "A significant number of the persons who make up our local community have ties to FAMU..."

The service is at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sanctuary @ Mt. Calvary Church, 4751 Walgreen Road, Jacksonville. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m.
