JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- We've seen it before, the last time gas prices went up to around $4.00 a gallon, drivers started looking for alternatives.  Now, transportation planners think carpooling could see a surge as gas prices go up again.

"Many folks have probably cut back as much as they can," explained North Florida Transportation Planning Organization Public Affairs Manager Marci Larson.   "So they might feel now that as the price gets $5 as it's supposed to after Memorial Day, they will be looking for some opportunities to save some money and carpooling is such an easy way to go."

The North Florida TPO is behind the "Cool to Pool" campaign.  The ride sharing network helps people find others interested in carpooling.  It also provides some extra incentives.  The emergency ride home program offers registered carpoolers the option of getting a cab or a rental car for free during an emergency.
