Episcopal School of Jacksonville has classes in grades 6 through 12

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Students at Episcopal School of Jacksonville will return to class this morning nearly two weeks after a murder-suicide on campus.

According to investigators, teacher Shane Schumerth returned to school with a gun after being fired earlier in the day on March 6.  He shot and killed Head of School Dale Regan before taking his own life.

After the shooting, Episcopal canceled classes for the remainder of the week.  Students were off the following week for Spring Break.

Today's class schedule is different from a typical day.  Faculty and staff will arrive between 7:45 and 8:05 a.m. and will attend a staff meeting before students are to arrive at 8:30.  The entire school community will attend a prayer service at 9:00 a.m. before classes begin.

Meg Sacks, Director of Marketing for Episcopal, said the school will have normal security on campus today.  The school will also have counselors available all week as students continue to cope with the tragedy.

"We have a challenging road ahead of us," Sacks wrote in an email.  "But with the entire community's support we will begin to heal and move forward."

Sacks said that each classroom was blessed with holy water following Regan's memorial on campus on March 9.
