JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Marissa Alexander's estranged husband broke his silence and spoke to the media for the first time today.

Rico Gray says it's finally time to hear his side of the story. Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted on three counts of aggravated assault after firing a warning shot at Gray inside their home in August 2010.

Gray said Alexander's family lied about the circumstances surrounding that night, and so did he. Gray said he had said that he abused Alexander and previous girlfriends to take the heat off of her.

"I said that in my initial deposition because me and Marissa got back together after the shooting incident. That was my wife. I didn't want my wife to go to prison," Gray said. "I wanted to help her. But she promised me that there would never be another incident like that in front of my kids."

But police reports show another incident between them before the trial where Alexander hit him, and he says that's when he decided to tell the truth.

He says his family has been traumatized by the whole thing and his son has nightmares about Alexander firing the shot.

Marissa Alexander and her family maintain that she was defending herself the day of the incident.
