JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Customers are lining up at the Tinseltown Chick-fil-A today to show their support of the chicken chain.

Former Republican Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee started unofficial "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" as an event on Facebook.  As of this morning, nearly 600,000 people had RSVPed.

Some people who stopped by the store at 4461 Southside Boulevard said they were simply picking up breakfast and had no political intentions, but many others said they planned their day around supporting the business.

"Because I agree with the whole concept of family and marriage is between a man and a woman," explained Kimberley Perkins, who picked up biscuits for breakfast.  "We love Chick-fil-A anyway, but we definitely wanted to support it today."

Perkins said she will return to the fast food chain for dinner.  Dennis Buyer said he would stop by for lunch if he could as well.

"It's one way we can show our appreciation and one way to show that these liberal mayors out there that not everybody is thinking their way," Buyer said, speaking of the recent outcry from mayors in Boston, Chicago and other cities over Chick-fil-A's policies.

Others were also showing their support and taking a stand against gay marriage.

"I am here to support Chick-fil-A's stand against gay marriage," said Sarhonda Jolly.

Carla Montgomery, who stopped at the Chick-fil-A later in the day, came with her son.

"We both are Christian and have our beliefs. I think Chick-fil-A is a good Christian company. I want to support them," she said.

Debbie Owen was happy to see others standing up for their beliefs.

"Oh my goodness. It is exciting to see Americans stand up for what they believe," she said.

Jacksonville's mayor has not taken a stand on the issue, but that did not stop Councilmember Don Redman from openly showing his support.

He posted on his Facebook page that even as a vegetarian, he will be eating at Chick-fil-A today to show his support.

"I will be at Chick Filet [sic] at Tinseltown, and have some chicken in honor of Dan Cathy, his family values and the business where he shared those values," Redman wrote.

"I think it's great," said Buyer of Redman's participation.  "The more people that show their appreciation the better.  If he's a vegetarian, fine.  I'm sure they have salads in there too."

National Same Sex Kiss Day
, which creators of the event say was not created in response to Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, will be held on Friday.
