JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A spokeswoman for Bolles Bartram Middle Schools said a 10-year-old boy who got tangled in a rope swing Wednesday night has died. It happened on an obstacle course next to the football field.
The boy was playing with his little sister while his older brother, who is a student at the school, was practicing football and dad was watching the practice, according to Jacksonville Sheriff's Officers at the scene.
"The sister and victim were playing together. She wandered away to play on a different part of the obstacle course. She looked over and saw him unresponsive. Actually, she thought he was joking around. He likes to kid around a lot. She ran over, tried to tickle him and wake him up and got no response," said Sgt. Shawn Coarsey of the JSO homicide unit.
Police said adults ran to help, including some doctors who were watching the football practice. CPR was started immediately.
The school is not releasing the child's name but said he was a student at Bolles Lower School.
